Dog Parks

There are multiple types of parks available to walk and entertain dogs. There are parks where you can walk dogs on leashes, there are parks designated for off-leash dog walking and there are parks built specifically for dogs to play and exercise. Houston has numerous off-leash dog parks with ammenities including lakes, exercise equipment, agitility tools, trails, and picnic areas.

Buffalo Bayou Dog Park - http://www.buffalobayou.org/parks.html

Description: With downtown’s skyline as its back drop, Houston’s premier greenbelt winds from Shepherd Drive on the west to Bagby Street on the East End. Eleanor Tinsley Park, located within this greenway (Taft-Sabine), is the site of major Houston festivals and events, including the city’s Fourth of July Fireworks.  “Dog Park” (site where dog lovers informally meet ) (2700 block of Allen Parkway at Studewood)

Description: Congressman Bill Archer Park, a 926 acre facility north of Interstate 10 on Highway 6 North, officially opened May 2, 2007. The facility features the third dog park to be opened in Precinct Three in recent years. The dog park has 17 acres for dogs of all sizes to run off leash - large dog area is 14 acres, small dog area is 3 acres. There are also shade trees for the dogs and their owners and showers for the dogs. Park patrons have access to 238 parking spaces. There are also swimming areas, water fountains, benches and trails.

Location: West Houston, off Hwy 6 north of I-10 about 1/2 a mile. Across from Bear Creek Park.

Description: This park opened October 12, 2005. It is the second dog park to be established in Precinct 3. The first was Millie Bush Dog Park in George Bush Park. The Jackson Family Dog Park is on Westpark Drive, immediately east of Loop 610. Access to the large parking lot is from Loop Central. The park and the parking lot are on Metro and Center Point Right of Way and Commissioner Radack, at the park opening, publicly thanked both companies for their help and cooperation in making it possible. The park is named for Danny Jackson, his wife Gail, son Houston and daughter Whitney.  Jackson is a member of the County Hospital Board of Managers and a former member of the West University Place City Council. All four Jackson’s attended the park opening with their two dogs, Dooley and Toby.

Location: Just inside the loop and just South of 59 - under the power lines, on Westpark Drive between Loop 610 and Loop Central.


Ervan Chew Dog Park - http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/dogparks.html

Description: Ervan Chew, located at 4502 Dunlavy , was the first neighborhood park in Houston to allow dogs to legally run free, off-leash in a designated dog zone. The dog zone is located adjacent to the picnic area and swimming pool. It is a fenced-in space, approximately 9,000 square feet in size and is designed to allow dogs to exercise freely. The Ervan Chew Park dog zone was the first step in providing an area for off-leash dogs. The Friends of Ervan Chew Park, a neighborhood organization, provided funding for the dog zone. Ervan Chew was dedicated in May of 2004,

Location: inside loop 610, 4502 Dunlavy. This park is East of Shephard and South of Richmond off the Southwest Freeway (Hwy 59).

Description: This park is the centerpiece of Pearland's Parks and Recreation Department. Independence Park is located at the end of Liberty Drive at the intersection with John Lizer Road.

Description: Levy Park, located at 3801 Eastside, is the newest addition to Houston's dog park facilities.  Acquired by the city in 1942, it was renovated in two phases by the Upper Kirby District and Intown Chamber of Commerce.  The most recent renovation was finished in 2006 and includes a designated dog run.  The new dog park is near the updated play equipment and the softball field.  Being surrounded by dog-filled apartment complexes, Levy Park should be a popular destination for the area's canines and their humans.

Location: 3801 Eastside, 1 block South of Richmond (between Kirby and Buffalo Spdwy)

Description: Maxey Park, located at 601 Maxey Road , was the second official dog park in the Houston Parks and Recreation system. Dedicated in September of 2004, this community park designated approximately 12 to 13 acres of parkland as a place for dogs. The area features a fenced-in space for the dogs to exercise off leash, and amenities include doggie drinking fountains, seperate areas for large and small dogs, a doggie shower, a waste disposal station and benches throughout the space. Maxey Park Bark and Run Park was funded in part by the Houston parks and Recreation Department and revenue generated from from the 2003 City of Houston Birthday Celebration, hosted by then council member Annise Parker.

Location: East Houston, 601 Maxey Road, next to the Metro Park and Ride. Exit I-10 East, go north on Federal Road, which turns into Maxey Road and it is on the right.

Description: This is the first dog park in the Harris County park system.  It is on Westheimer Parkway in George Bush Park.  It occupies 15 acres and includes three small lakes, an agility course, swimming areas, water fountains, dog shwoers, pickup bags and more.  The park was developed with the advice and assistance of the Houston Dog Park Association and the operators of some of the older dog parks in other cities.  The parking lot at the dog park has spaces for 100 vehicles, double its original size.   This park has been very popular and Commissioner Radack opened a second dog park in October 2005.

Description: This 1.1 acre park is located at 575 East Hathaway and is next to the Alvin EMS facility. Park has playground, swings, picnic tables, parking and Hike & Bike Trail.  Off-leash dog park, walking trails, swimming pond and agility course.

Description: Pearland's newest park, nestled on the west side of town, is easily accessible from 518 and Hwy 288. Southdown Park is the perfect spot for your whole family, two and four legged alike! Off leash dog park, this cute, colorful, well-sized dog park takes up the south end of a community park that has picnic tables and playgrounds.Double gate added, sturdy agility equipment designed for having fun, rather than for competition

Description: Located at Lafayette Park at 4337 Lafayette in Bellaire.  The Bellaire dog park officially opened its gates on October 5th and was named "The Officer Lucy Dog Park" in honor of Officer Lucy, Bellaire's K-9 detective who passed away recently of natural causes.

Location: Just inside loop 610, 4337 Lafayette in Bellaire. near Beechnut and NewCastle.
